About the Book: There is a reason why

“EVER SCAR
TELLS A STORY”

There Is a Reason Why is more than a memoir—it’s a powerful testimony of becoming. In this deeply personal autobiography, Dr. Marc Edgar Royster shares the emotional, spiritual, and psychological evolution of a Black boy growing up in Liberty City, Miami, into a Black man shaped by war, trauma, faith, and resilience.

From childhood moments of joy—chasing lizards, playing with cousins, learning to live with little—to the harsh realities of inner-city violence and cultural pressures, Dr. Royster’s story is unflinching. His journey through the U.S. Army, including serving as a peacekeeper in Egypt and boots-on-the-ground in the first Gulf War, adds raw, transformative layers to a life lived on the edge of collapse and awakening.

Reading There Is a Reason Why felt like having a deeply personal conversation with someone who has lived through the storms and come out with wisdom to share. From the very first chapter, I was drawn into Dr. Royster’s world—not just because of his powerful storytelling, but because of the raw honesty in every sentence. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and that’s what makes his story so relatable and moving. As I read about his childhood in Liberty City, I found myself nodding at the familiar dynamics—the love, the fear, the struggle, and the strength that so many of us grow up with but rarely put into words. His journey through the military, his encounters with trauma, and his reflections on identity and faith hit me on a soul level.
